Needs: hunger, energy and health

The three rings of your character, what drains and refills each one, how to eat and heal, what the warnings say, and what happens when a ring runs out.

Updated 3 November 2026

The three rings

At the bottom left of the screen you see three small rings, from left to right:

  • Energy (a lightning bolt)
  • Hunger (fork and knife)
  • Health (a plus)

These needs belong to you, the player. In co-op every player has their own rings.

The rings are not always on screen. When nothing is low and nothing is changing, they fade away so the screen stays clean. They come back when a value changes, and they stay while anything is running low. Low health keeps them visible.

When a ring runs low it turns red and pulses, and a small note names the low need with its percentage. When nothing is low, the note shows all three. During the opening helicopter intro of a new game the rings are hidden.

Hunger

What it does. Hunger goes down slowly as time passes. A full ring means you are fed, an empty ring means you are starving.

Warnings. When hunger gets low the game shows "You are starving. You should eat something." You see it twice on the way down, so you have time to react.

What happens at zero. While hunger is at zero you lose health, one point at a time. Do not stay there.

How to refill it. Eat. See "Eating" below.

Energy

What it does. Energy goes down while you run fast or swim. Walking slowly or standing still does not spend it. Swimming drains it at a different rate than running. Energy slowly comes back by itself while you walk or stand still.

What happens at zero. With no energy you can only walk at a normal pace. You cannot sprint until a little energy returns, so a short rest fixes it. When the bar is full again your normal speed comes back.

How to refill it fully. Save and start the next day at a save point, see the Saving page. Every player in the game gets full energy for the new morning. Starting the next day also makes you slightly hungrier.

Health

What it does. Health only goes down when something hurts you, or when you are starving.

How to refill it. Use medical supplies, or stand in the hospital area. See "Healing" below.

Eating

  1. Walk up to a food stand and talk to it.
  2. The Food stand screen opens with a Menu. Each item shows how much hunger it removes in the Satiety column. An item that does not show a value shows a dash.
  3. Buy what you want. You need the right company level for an item, enough money and free space in your inventory. If your inventory is full you see "Your inventory is full".
  4. Take the food in your hand (it must be the item you are holding) and use it. Your hunger ring goes up, and it never goes above full. The food is used up.

Food must be fresh. Old food cannot be eaten and the game says "This food is not fresh." You can eat even if you are not hungry, it just is not useful.

If a stand has nothing to sell right now you see "Nothing on the menu right now."

Healing

  1. Go to the Clinic. It sells Medical supplies.
  2. Buy a supply. It goes to your inventory and hotbar.
  3. Take it in your hand and use it. Your health goes up, and it never goes above full. The supply is used up.

Right now the Bandage is the supply you can buy. Other medical items appear in the list marked "Not on sale yet." If the Clinic has nothing to sell you see "No medical supplies right now."

A supply that is not fresh cannot be used. The game tells you "This medicine is not fresh." Buy a new one instead.

The hospital area

The hospital also heals you when you stand inside its area. This is the place you wake up in if you were hurt badly, see below.

If your health runs out

There are two ways to reach zero health, and they end differently:

  • Hurt to zero (for example by an accident): after a short delay you wake up at the hospital with a little health. Your company, your level and your research are not erased.
  • Starving to zero: your hunger ring is filled again so you can go on. Your health is not restored by this, so heal right away.

Do not plan around either one. Eat and heal before it comes to that.

Food and medicine in Safekeeping

Food and medicine items can sit in your Safekeeping app on the tablet, under their own headers Food and Medicine. You can only take items out at the place the app tells you (see the Saving page).

Keys

  • Sprint: Left Shift (gamepad: press the left stick).
  • Interact with a food stand or the Clinic: E (gamepad: right face button).
  • Hotbar slots: the number keys 1 to 9.
  • Tablet: B (gamepad: D-pad Right).

Tips

  • Eat before the ring turns red, not after.
  • Keep one medical supply in your hotbar for emergencies.
  • Eat whenever you pass a food stand, so a long job never starts hungry.
  • Do not run everywhere. Save sprinting for long distances and your energy lasts.
  • Keep the food and medicine you carry fresh. Buy new ones when they get old.
  • Look out for your friends too in co-op. Their rings are their own.
